Sugeng is a tenured researcher at the Purwodadi Botanic Garden-Indonesian Institute of Sciences. He gained Bachelor of Forestry from Bogor Agricultural University, and Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy on Environmental Sciences both from the University of Queensland, Australia. His research interests encompass from conservation biology, restoration ecology, ecosystem services, decision-making theory to land-use planning. His research and opinions have been published in scientific journals as well as featured in popular media (Kompas, Jakarta Post, Jakarta Globe, New Scientist, and Mongabay). Sugeng is a Young Fellow for IPBES (Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services, a body under the auspices of UNEP, UNESCO, FAO and UNDP) for the Thematic Assessment on Land Degradation and Restoration.
