Rudie Trienes was trained as a biologist at a number of universities in the Netherlands, and as a philosopher at various universities throughout Europe. He received his PhD from Rome University, Italy.
He worked as invited lecturer at universities in the UK, Italy, Greece, Portugal, Germany, Austria, France, and South-Africa. In 2004 he joined the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW), Amsterdam, as Head of the Department of International Relations. In the last twelve years he has been responsible for the science policy of the programmes the Academy runs on South East Asia and China on behalf of the Dutch Ministry of Science. For the last ten years he is, on behalf of the KNAW, project leader of the Framework 7 SEA EU NET project, a multilateral project fostering the S&T dialogue between Europe and South East Asia. He has been delegation-leader of a number of Science and Technology Fact Finding Missions into South East Asia for the European Commission. He also acts as Advisor to the Board of Radboud University Nijmegen, The Netherlands, on Internationalisation with particular regard to Indonesia.
Rudie Trienes has published in peer-reviewed learned journals, but also for a broader public on environmental degradation, social conditions, and science policy in Indonesia.
