Jacqueline Vel is researcher and coordinator of the program “JARAK: the commoditization of an alternative biofuel crop in Indonesia” as part of the KNAW and NWO funded “Agriculture beyond Food” research program. JARAK is an interdisciplinary program combining the fields of law, history, anthropology, political ecology and plant science (agronomy). Jacqueline Vel worked for six years in a grass root rural development project in Sumba (NTT), Indonesia. She obtained her PhD degree (1994) at Wageningen Agricultural University, and was researcher/lecturer at the University of Amsterdam (Asian Studies) (1998-2006). Since 2006 she is researcher at the Van Vollenhoven Institute for Law, Governance and Development at the Leiden Law School. Her publications in social and social legal science have a regional focus on Eastern Indonesia, thematically concentrating on land rights, natural resources, democratization, local politics and rural development. Several articles and the translation of her PhD thesis have been published in Bahasa Indonesia.
