Chris Chaplin is a postdoctoral researcher at the Royal Netherlands Institute of Southeast Asian and Caribbean Studies (KITLV), interested on the rise of global Islamic doctrines within Southeast Asia and their influence on understandings of activism, politics, community and national identity amongst urban populations. He is currently investigating the influence of conservative Islamic movements on ideas of citizenship and civic activism in Makassar, South Sulawesi. Prior to joining the KITLV, he completed his PhD concerning the dynamics of the Salafi Islamic movement in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, at the Department of Sociology, University of Cambridge.
