John Holmes is a Senior Research Fellow at the University of Oxford where his research is concerned with making better links between science and policy makingHe is also Secretary to the Energy Programme of the European Academies Science Advisory Council in which role he manages a programme of energy studies to inform European policy makers.

His previous career spanned the assessment and development of clean coal technologies, responsibility for the science and the engineering of the UK’s radioactive waste disposal programme, and being head of the science programme of the Environment Agency, the environmental regulator for England and Wales.

He has a first degree in natural sciences from Cambridge University, a PhD in engineering from Imperial College, and an MBA from Henley Management College.
