Reinout van Crevel studied Medicine in Amsterdam and is now working as an internist-infectious diseases specialist at the Radboud UMC in Nijmegen. For more than 10 years he has had a leading role in collaboration in infectious diseases research between Indonesia and the Netherlands, first as part of his own PhD in tuberculosis (2003), afterwards as a supervisor for others. Between 2006 and 2009 he lived in Bandung, coordinating a comprehensive program on HIV-prevention and care in the context of injecting drug use, in the hospital, laboratories, methadone and community, prison and schools. His main focus is tuberculosis, working with a multidisciplinary research group in Bandung and Papua. Basic research focusses on the interaction of the ‘innate’ immune system and Mycobacterium tuberculosis, to understand why certain people develop tuberculosis and others do not. Clinical and operational research aims to improve diagnosis and treatment of different forms of tuberculosis.
