The Role of Geology in Earthquake Hazard Analysis in Indonesia
Earthquake hazards and risk at any location are depending upon the following factors: earthquake source characteristics, local geologic condition and their response to shaking, and built structures. Geology plays an important role in various aspects of the seismic hazard analysis such as characterization of active faults as the earthquake source (determining their location, geometry, timing, frequency, and estimated magnitude of past earthquakes on the faults). In addition, ground shaking caused by an earthquake for any given area will vary due to differences in the topography, bedrock and sediment type, and their proximity to the earthquake source. These all affect the way the seismic waves travel through the ground. All of these can be estimated using geological methods. In this presentation, I will talk about geological aspects of seismic hazard analysis and various geological methods to study earthquakes. I will also discuss about seismic hazard analysis in Indonesia.
